「新幹線のお医者さん」として親しまれているドクターイエロー。
線路や架線、信号・通信設備などを、営業運転とほぼ同じ速度で走行しながら点検し、新幹線の安全運行を陰で支える特別な車両です。
運行ダイヤは公表されていなかったため、その姿を見かける機会はとても希少。「見ると幸せになれる」と言われ、多くの鉄道ファンや旅行者に愛されてきました。
老朽化に加え、近年は営業車両に検測機能が搭載されたことから、JR東海では2025年1月に検測運転を終了。JR西日本でも2027年1月をもって検測運転を終了し、これをもってドクターイエローは完全に引退します。
東京駅は東海道新幹線の始発駅であり、ドクターイエローが発着する代表的な駅の一つ。タイミングが合えば、その貴重な姿に出会えるかもしれません。
Known as the “doctor” of the Shinkansen, Doctor Yellow is a special inspection train that helps keep Japan’s high-speed rail network running safely. Traveling at nearly the same speed as regular Shinkansen trains, it inspects tracks, overhead power lines, and signaling systems to ensure safe and reliable operations.
Because its schedule was never publicly announced, sightings were rare, earning it the nickname “the lucky train”—many believe that seeing Doctor Yellow brings good fortune.
Due to aging equipment and the introduction of inspection functions on regular passenger trains in recent years, JR Central ended its Doctor Yellow inspection operations in January 2025. JR West will also end its inspection operations in January 2027, marking the retirement of the Doctor Yellow.
Tokyo Station, the starting point of the Tokaido Shinkansen, is one of the iconic places where Doctor Yellow has appeared. If you’re lucky, you may still catch a glimpse of this legendary train.

東京駅から始まる、西洋建築を巡る旅へ。今回は旧古河庭園の洋館の内側に迫ります！
正面玄関からホールを抜け、まず左手に現れるのが撞球室（どうきゅうしつ）。現在でいうビリヤードルームです。その奥には、モダンな床のデザインが印象的なサンルームが続きます。ビリヤードを楽しんだ紳士たちが煙草を燻らせながら語らい、交流を深めていた当時の賑わいが目に浮かぶようです。
書斎の隣の応接室は、淑女たちがティータイムを楽しみ、会話に花を咲かせた優雅な空間。大きな窓からは柔らかな光が差し込み、随所に施されたバラのレリーフが、華やかな雰囲気をいっそう引き立てています。
アカンサスの装飾が美しい小食堂を抜けると、迎賓の舞台であった大食堂へ。部屋の境にある厚い壁からは、この洋館がレンガ造りであることを実感できます。天井には植物や果実をモチーフにした優美なレリーフが施され、格調高い空間を演出。そして各部屋に設えられたマントルピースは、一つとして同じ意匠がありません。細部にまで宿る職人の美意識が、この洋館の特別な価値を物語っています。
現在、大食堂ではケーキセットを楽しむことができ、歴史ある空間で特別なひとときを過ごせます。
大食堂から続くテラスに出ると、そこには時が止まったかのような静けさが。かつてはパーティーの合間にゲストが夜風に身を委ね、庭園を渡る風や木々のささやきに耳を傾けながら、語らいの余韻を楽しんでいたのでしょう。そんな情景を思い描かずにはいられない、ドラマチックな場所です。
東京ステーションホテルが位置する東京駅丸の内駅舎を設計した辰野金吾。その恩師であるジョサイア・コンドルが最後に手がけた洋館「旧古河庭園」は、ホテルから電車で約20分でアクセス可能です。重厚な洋館と四季折々に表情を変える庭園で、大正時代の建築美に触れてみませんか。
This time, we step inside the Western-style mansion at Kyu-Furukawa Gardens.
Beyond the entrance hall are the billiard room and a charming sunroom with a striking floor design, where one can imagine gentlemen enjoying billiards and conversation over cigars.
Next to the study is the elegant drawing room, where ladies once gathered for afternoon tea. Soft light and delicate rose reliefs add to its charm.
Beyond the small dining room lies the grand dining room, once used for entertaining guests. Botanical and fruit motifs adorn the ceiling, while every mantelpiece features a unique design, showcasing the craftsmanship throughout the house.
Today, visitors can enjoy a cake set in this historic setting.
The terrace offers a timeless sense of tranquility, where guests once enjoyed the evening breeze and garden views.
Designed by Josiah Conder, mentor to Kingo Tatsuno, architect of Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, Kyu-Furukawa Gardens is about 20 minutes by train from The Tokyo Station Hotel.
