明治政府に招かれた英国人建築家ジョサイア・コンドル。その教えを受けた工部大学校（現・東京大学工学部）の第一期生が、東京駅丸の内駅舎を設計した辰野金吾です。そして、わずか4人の同期生の一人、片山東熊（かたやまとうくま）が設計したのが、国宝 迎賓館赤坂離宮です。
迎賓館赤坂離宮は、1909年に紀州徳川家の江戸中屋敷跡地に東宮御所として建設されました。正面玄関を守るように配された阿吽の鎧武者像や、菊花紋章・桐紋などの意匠が、建物の威厳と格式をあらわしています。日本で唯一のネオ・バロック様式による宮殿建築として知られる迎賓館赤坂離宮。その壮麗な姿からは、明治という時代が目指した近代国家としての気概と、美意識を感じることができます。
さらに2026年7月からは、従来の参観ルートに加え、ムーリッシュ様式が印象的な「東の間」や、皇太子・皇太子妃殿下の玄関、回廊など、これまで原則非公開だった空間の公開が始まりました。東西玄関には画家・藤田嗣治の作品4点も展示されており、建築だけでなく美術を楽しめる見どころも。これまで以上に、迎賓館の魅力を深く味わえる貴重な機会となっています。

Follow the footsteps of Japan’s architectural pioneers from The Tokyo Station Hotel.
British architect Josiah Conder, invited to Japan during the Meiji era, taught at the Imperial College of Engineering. Among his first graduates were Kingo Tatsuno, architect of the Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, and Tokuma Katayama, who designed the National Treasure State Guest House, Akasaka Palace.
Completed in 1909 as the Crown Prince’s residence, Akasaka Palace is Japan’s only Neo-Baroque palace. From the samurai statues at the entrance to the imperial chrysanthemum and paulownia emblems, its details reflect the elegance and ambition of the Meiji era.
Since July 2026, previously restricted areas have opened to visitors, including the Moorish-style East Room, the entrance used by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess, and connecting corridors. Four paintings by Tsuguharu Foujita are also on display, adding an artistic highlight to the visit.

東京ステーションホテルが位置する丸の内は、かつて江戸城の城内でした。
江戸城を築いた徳川家康と、豊臣政権を支えた石田三成。両者が対峙したのが、「関ヶ原の戦い」です。慶長5年9月15日、天下の行方を決める戦いが関ヶ原の地で繰り広げられました。
東軍を率いる家康と、西軍を率いる三成。両軍が激突した「天下分け目の戦い」は、わずか一日で決着。家康の勝利によって、やがて江戸幕府が開かれ、約260年にわたる江戸時代が始まりました。
東京駅を望むこの場所には、江戸の歴史へとつながる時間が確かに息づいています。
Marunouchi, where The Tokyo Station Hotel stands today, was once part of Edo Castle.
Tokugawa Ieyasu, who built Edo Castle, and Ishida Mitsunari, a key figure in the Toyotomi government, faced each other at the Battle of Sekigahara. On September 15, 1600, the battle that would determine the future of Japan took place at Sekigahara.
Ieyasu led the Eastern Army, while Mitsunari led the Western Army. Known as the “Battle that Divided Japan,” the conflict was decided in just one day. Ieyasu’s victory eventually led to the establishment of the Edo Shogunate and the beginning of the Edo period, which lasted for nearly 260 years.
With views of Tokyo Station, this place still carries a sense of history connecting us to the days of Edo.
